On the 26 – 30 September 2022 the International Labour Organisation (ILO) held a meeting on the protection of whistleblowers in the public sector. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss challenges and solutions, with the aim of adopting conclusions including recommendations for future ILO action.
The meeting brought together 113 participants. WIN and Transparency International were among the international non-governmental organizations invited to participate in the meeting as observers, along the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF).
The ILO is the United Nations agency mandated with advancing social and economic justice through setting international labour standards. It is the only ‘tri-partite’ UN agency which means it includes Governments, Workers and Employers in its decision-making processes.
The intensive week-long meeting resulted in the adoption of conclusions which made several recommendations for future work for the ILO ‘office’ and ILO members - towards more effective implementation and policy coherence of whistleblower protection standards.
