Transparency International Netherlands

Profile details upcoming! Transparency International Nederland (TI-NL) is the Dutch Chapter of the global anti-corruption organisation Transparency International. It is our mission to stop corruption and promote transparency, accountability and integrity at all levels and across all sectors of society. Our vision is a world in which government, business, civil society and the daily lives of people are free of corruption. Our core values are: transparency, accountability, integrity, solidarity, courage, justice and democracy.

We are committed to the worldwide protection of whistleblowers and journalists’ sources. Many recent scandals would have never been revealed without the reporting of these courageous people. LuxLeaks, the Panama Papers and the abuse of data by Cambridge Analytica are just a few examples. In each case, an individual blew the whistle, putting their own reputation and career at stake. Prevention is better than cure – and a culture of integrity and accountability is an important step towards preventing corrupt behaviour. And yet a culture where the reporters of wrongdoing are valued and do not have to become whistleblowers is unfortunately still the exception rather than the rule. With this in mind, TI-NL will continue to call attention to the protection of whistleblowers, increasing mutual accountability in organisations and the de jure and de facto embedding of integrity in the multitude of decision-making processes – from the decisions made in Dutch politics to those of a sales agent of a Dutch company in a remote country.

TI-NL has been working on whistleblowing protection since 2012 and is the only NGO active on this particular topic in The Netherlands. We have supported the adoption of stand-alone legislation protecting whistleblowers and are now working on the effective implementation and enforcement of these rules, including identifying potential shortcomings, loopholes and policy recommendations for the evaluation of the Act and the implementation of the EU Directive on whistleblower protection. We aim to support those experiencing corruption first hand, by enabling them to blow the whistle on corruption. This includes advocating for the legal and practical provisions to make this possible, working with the private sector to ensure proper internal whistleblowing mechanisms and to stimulate a speak-up culture but also trying to improve the imaging of blowing the whistle.
