In a panel event sponsored by the
Real Facebook Oversight Board, Foxglove and
The Signals Network, you’ll hear from former content moderator Daniel Motaung and experts on disinformation on how to address the crisis in Facebook content moderation, and the emerging risks to Africa and the rest of the world.
When: 10 May, 2022. 12:00 pm (ET) / 5:00 pm (GMT)
Where: Online.
Livestream.
In February, former Facebook content moderator Daniel Motaung
came forward to TIME sharing his story of trauma, poverty wages and alleged union busting inside a Facebook content moderation center in Kenya. Aided by outsourced content moderation contractor Sama, Facebook’s actions in Kenya are a window into the company’s global business practices and human rights impact.
Daniel is now the claimant in a forthcoming legal case against Sama and Meta, in what is thought to be the world’s first lawsuit demanding that Facebook reform the conditions of content moderators’ work.
Panel
Billy Perrigo of TIME will moderate.
- Cori Crider, Director of Foxglove Legal
- Delphine Halgand-Mishra, Executive Director, The Signals Network and the Tech Accountability Project
- Daniel Motaung, whistleblower and former content moderator for Meta/Sama involved in legal action against both companies
- Phumzile Van Damme, disinformation expert and former MP, South Africa
Participants will issue a call to action for Facebook to urgently address these overlapping crises, and announce new developments in the case.
