The
International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) is hosting a webinar on whistleblowing and whistleblower protection in the COVID-19 era. Whistleblowing has proved to be an effective means of unearthing complex and often hidden corruption practices and regulatory infractions. Yet the protection of whistleblowers continues to be a serious challenge in most jurisdictions. This, in turn, undermines the effectiveness of whistleblowing as a potent tool to detect corruption cases. Experts believe that COVID-19 virus pandemic has heightened the risk of corruption and fraud in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. In particular, procurements carried out in emergency conditions in the health sector, and the huge stimulus packages provided in many countries to businesses and individuals, have provided opportunities for corrupt practices to emerge. We have put together a panel to discuss what whistleblowing means now, and whether the importance of speaking up about corruption can reinforced by providing a more conducive environment for disclosures and more readily protect those who report directly outside their employment.
Join IACA’s Dean and Executive Secretary, Thomas Stelzer, in welcoming a discussion moderated by WIN’s Executive Director, Anna Myers with Andrea Franzoso, who blew the whistle on corruption in a state-owned company in Italy, and with an esteemed panel of experts:
- Leah Ambler, Legal Analyst and Manager of the Latin America Anti-Corruption Programme at the OECD
- Karin Buzanich-Sommeregger, Partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer
- Fabian Teichmann, Lawyer and President at Teichmann International
The webinar will be held on Monday the 8th of June 2020 at 14:00 CET. For more information and registration, please see
