There has been an alarming increase in the number of cases brought by wealthy people in British courts against journalists. Members of parliament thought they had solved the libel problem when they changed the law around defamation in 2013, but some magnates and moguls don't appear to have got the memo.
The most high profile example of recent times has been the parallel cases brought by Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club; Russia's Rosneft oil company; and several other tycoons against Catherine Belton and HarperCollins, the publishers of her book Putin's People. The final case was settled at the end of last year, and the Frontline Club is delighted to host a kleptoscope evening dedicated to discussing what Britain needs to do about libel.
Speakers:
Oliver Bullough - Journaliast
Catherine Belton - Reporter at Reuters News
Arabella Pike - Publishing Director at Harper Collins
Caroline Kean - Solicitor and Partner at Wiggin
Susan Coughtrie - Project Director of The Foreign Policy Centre
