About: Effective whistleblower protection is vital to bringing to light wrongdoing. But Australia's current framework — fragmented across multiple laws, inconsistently enforced, and lacking a dedicated oversight body — continues to leave those who report wrongdoing exposed to retaliation and without adequate recourse.
This is a pivotal time for reform. The government has signalled its intention to establish a whistleblower ombudsman, while Treasury reviews of the Corporations Act and Tax Administration Act present a further opportunity to strengthen protections across the private sector. How these reforms are designed and implemented will determine whether Australia's whistleblower framework is fit for purpose for years to come.
The 5th National Whistleblowing Symposium takes place 20th July in Sydney to examine these developments and advance the case for reform. Together with government, the private sector, academia, civil society and the media, the symposium will provide a forum for expert dialogue, evidence-based debate, and strategic engagement with the reform process.
