The Irish Times revealed that Dawn Meats, a large player in the meat industry whose clients include the fast-food chain McDonald's and the Supermarket Aldi, has begun the construction of an incinerator that could break European emissions regulations. The information supporting this investigation includes documents obtained by the environmental
NGO Climate Whistleblowers.
Valfortec Power Plants (VPP), a Spanish energy company contracted by Dawn Meats, produced documents showing that the incinerator, since being evaluated, is predicted to have emissions at 80mg/Nm3 of sulphur dioxide. This is contrary to documents Dawn Meats submitted to the Irish EPA when the project was permitted, stating that the plant would only emit the legal 50mg/Nm3 of sulphur dioxide, which is the limit of emissions able to be produced under EU regulations.
