Pre-Register for TSN's Journalist Training
Date Published: 4 May 2026
WIN membership organisation The Signals Network (TSN), in partnership with the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), is launching a free online training programme for journalists.
The programme will be accessible online soon and will focus on the psychological, digital and legal aspects of the journalist–source relationship. It will provide a concrete toolbox and practical advice on how to engage with sources — from the first contact to post-publication to maintain professional and ethical boundaries while managing anxiety and trauma.
Launching in 2026, TSN & RJI’s training program will prepare journalists to protect sources through five key areas:
- establishing secure communication and guidelines,
- recognising when sources underestimate their own risks,
- handling documents and other sensitive materials safely to limit exposure,
- building trust through honest communication, and
- making strategic decisions that prioritise source safety and publication impact.
The 5 modules, meant for young reporters as well as experienced ones, combine practical theory with actionable tools journalists can implement immediately, including checklists, decision frameworks, and resource directories tailored to the unique challenges of working with vulnerable sources in today’s high-risk environment.
Resources mean nothing without accessibility. Support from RJI ensures these tools reach those who need them most. The online modules will live permanently on The Signals Network’s website and be free to access.
In addition, TSN will offer in-person sessions in newsrooms and at journalism conferences.
